Today, on 13th June India is globally on the 4th Rank of Worst-Hit countries by COVID19. Mumbai is the epicenter of coronavirus in India contributing to 18.5% of the total cases. While it seems that Malad is now becoming the worst-hit part of Mumbai!
On 27th May, there were 1049 Coronavirus cases in Malad. Now, on 9th June there are 2,353 coronavirus cases in Malad. It means that the cases are more than double in just 13 days! With 1,637 active cases, Malad is now the second most affected region of Mumbai after Andheri East. There are 1,772 active cases in Andheri East.
While the cases were increasing in Dharavi, the P-North ward (Malad) was receiving praises for keeping cases under control. Now, when the situations in Dharavi are a little bit under control, Malvani – one of the biggest slums of Mumbai situated in Malad is showing a high spike of cases.
It is noteworthy that the growth rate of cases in Maharashtra including Mumbai is lowering down. But, in Malad, the growth rate is highest in Mumbai! Out of all the cases in Malad, 70% of cases are coming from slums like Konkani Pada, Santosh Nagar, and Appa Pada. Whereas, rest 30% of cases are from the residential societies.
Right now, there are more than 300 Seal Buildings and 32 Containment Zones in Malad! Jaya Tiwana, BJP Corporator from Malad West says,
“BMC officers and police are trying very hard but are exhausted. We are afraid cases will increase in July and August during the monsoon.”
The main reason BMC is stating for such a huge spike is that people aren’t following the laws properly. It is becoming difficult and exhausting to control the people after Unlock-1 and ‘Mission Begin Again’.
