Paul Soles provided the voice of Spider-Man for 53 episodes of the animated series. They included J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant, the Vulture, Scorpion, Electro, Sandman, the Green Goblin, Rhino, and many other characters from Spider-early Man’s exploits in the series.

An In-Depth Narrative

In 2014, Marvel and Netflix struck an agreement to see four B-level superheroes each get their TV show on Netflix. According to reports, the deal was worth $200 million. There is no disrespect to Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, or Luke Cage, but those four names together aren’t as well-known as Spider-Man, especially in the early ’60s.

Compared to today’s typical cost of a superhero series, production qualities for cartoons were significantly lower in the 1970s and 1980s. While that may be true, Marvel’s Saturday morning kid’s show, Grantray-Lawrence Animation, and eventually Krantz Films, cost very little money.

Spider-Man ’67 was a collaborative production between Canada and the United States based on Stan Lee’s Spider-Man comic book series and artist Steve Ditko’s designs. The Grantray-Lawrence firm produced the animation in season one while a Canadian voiceover studio provided the talent.

The Spider-Meme is right around the corner

On 4chan in 2009, the “Spider-Man ’67” meme was born. User submissions of their favorite weird screenshots from each episode were encouraged by the /co/ (cartoon) board’s moderators.

“Spider-man on his day off” was one of the most popular topics, with more than 200 entries containing photographs of Spider-Man from the 1967 series with humorous captions that resembled LOLcats. From there, the Spiderman memes spread to Tumblr, Reddit, and Pinterest, among other sites.

The 1960s Spiderman Memes success spawned a slew of spinoff memes. A few of these memes include: “Masturbating Spider-Man,” which depicts Spider-Man “simply sitting there masturbating” while commenting on prominent subjects; Using images and captions from the 1960s Spider-Man series; and Spider-Man Pointing At Spider-Man from the episode “Double Identity,” conversations concerning other topics are hijacked. It’s a common meme used to describe instances in which two people who look alike meet for the first time and make light of it.
