You must have heard the saying that love knows no odds and that’s true. When a person falls in love, age, gender, or colour doesn’t matter to them. And in a society that promotes age-old rules of heteronormativity, it is said that a man will marry a woman and not in the same gender. But marrying a transgender is still considered a taboo and a sin in this society. Some people would go above and beyond to stop a union of a man and a transgender woman.

But the sky is the limit for love, a young man from Telangana proved it when he fell in love with a transgender woman and decided to get married.

Ganesh from Khammam City met Deepu, a transgender individual, from Andhra Pradesh’s Nandigama town, and the two fell in love. The couple decided to get married and tied the knot on Saturday at the Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy temple in Vemulawada. Although getting married to each other was not as easy as falling in love.

Both Deepu and Ganesh faced opposition from their respective families who weren’t willing to accept them getting married. But that did not cause a moment of doubt between the two and they eventually tied the knot.

Thanks to legislation passed in 2019, transgender individuals are now allowed to change their legal gender in India after undergoing sex reassignment surgery. They also have the constitutional right to register as a third gender in the country. There are approximately 4,80,000 transgender people in India. However, Indian LGBT community people continue to face social and legal challenges that non-LGBT people do not face.

Both Deepu and Ganesh even approached the police to provide them protection from their families. Their story was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by journalist Uma Sudhir.

“Love knows no gender or region: newly married couple Ganesh from Khammam, Telangana & Deepu, transgender from Nandigama Andhra Pradesh, met in Hyderabad & fell in love one year ago; they got married one week ago & came to PS for protection as families opposed,” she wrote on X.
