A recent discovery made during an expedition in Vietnam showed that the world’s largest cave, Son Doong, is even bigger than we have thought. The Son Doong cave is actually the world’s largest cave located in a remote area of the Vietnamese jungle. In 2009, some British divers ventured to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park to explore the cave’s waterways in the jungle-filled Quang Binh Province of central Vietnam. During their dive, they discovered an underwater tunnel that connects the largest cave in the world with another enormous cave called Hang Thung.

When the British divers first started exploring the Son Doong cave, they ran into a 46-foot high wall made of muddy calcite and named it, The Great Wall of Vietnam.

The cave is near the border of Laos and is part of a network of 150+ caves in the Annamite Mountains. There may be more caves in the area but have not been found yet.
