The owner of Thurston Waffles named Matt uploaded quite a heartbreaking post on the cat’s Instagram handle. Coming forward with the news that Thurston, the screaming meme cat had unexpectedly died, at the age of 15. If you can’t guess or recognize who I’m talking about, Thurston Waffles was a screaming meme cat who probably not all of us know by name. The cat did have 421k social media followers who knew him well, who most of us can’t compete with. The rest of us know him best for the edits of his dramatic screaming, one of which involves his likeness edited onto the MGM logo, where he roared his way into online fame and became a backdrop to many memes.
He died suffering from a sinus infection which happened due to nasal cancer. The cat’s owners named Matt and Shelli shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram and Twitter.

“After 15 years we made a substantial positive life change. During the one month since we got here, Thurston loved the new house. Only days before we lost him he was sprinting around the house like a kitten, which is why what happened next was so shocking and difficult to process.”
They also said that they together have been fighting with what looks like a sinus infection for quite a few weeks now. The owners said that The vets (we had two separate opinions) reasonably thought it had to be either a sinus infection or something related to his teeth. So after treating him with antibiotics and not having the problem go away, the vet suggested we do a dental.
The Instagram post also said that the two of them thought that it was probably an abscessed tooth. But, the vet informed them later that day that the cat’s teeth were all okay but they had discovered a mass. They asked if the two wanted to go for a CAT scan, to which the two of them agreed, after which it was looked at by a radiologist who then informed that it was nasal cancer.
Upon waking up, his sinus infection went into overdrive, he did not respond to antibiotics, and two days later he was gone. I hope it comforts you to know that we did everything we could to make him feel happy and safe and that his passing was gentle. He spent his last days in front of his favorite lamp with his mom and me making everything feel as normal as possible.
As per the Knowyourmeme, Thurston Waffles reached their highest peak of internet fame in June 2019 after an Instagram video of him meowing went all viral, and people started using it in edits and de facto replacing Smudge in video versions of Woman Yelling at Cat memes.
