Gross negligence!

Medical negligence can often get deadly for the patient but the worst part is when responsible individuals confidently break protocols and go on justifying it. Such professionals should be removed from their positions to ensure public safety. That’s exactly what happened in this case where the nurse was suspended by the official authorities after she chose a bizarre treatment for a child’s injury.

Karnataka nurse uses Fevikwik instead of stitches on 7-year-old child’s wound, suspended

In a recently reported case from India, a government nurse used super glue instead of putting stitches on the wounds of a 7-year-old child. Disturbing as it may sound, it is sadly true. When a child named Gurukishan Annappa Hosamani was rushed for medical assistance, profusely bleeding from a deep facial wound, the hospital nurse used a commercial adhesive called Fevikwik, instead of stitches to suture the injury. Gurukishan’s parents were shocked at her approach but what came next was even more unbelievable!

The nurse, identified as Jyoti, claimed that Fevikwik is a better alternative than stitches as the latter could leave a permanent scar on the boy’s face. This is the reasoning she presented when the parents of the patient questioned her behavior. Alarmed by Jyoti’s approach, the family started recording a video of the whole act. But surprisingly, instead of refraining, the nurse went on confidently justifying her actions stating she had been “following this practice for years”.

When Gurukishan’s parents made a hue and cry about the incident, the authorities did not seem to take strict action. Instead, they simply transferred Jyoti to another healthcare facility. This pushed the patient’s family to go ahead and file a formal complaint against the nurse and the entire public healthcare facility. The footage that the family recorded as evidence of the shocking lapse was submitted after which it went viral on social media. The viral video sparked widespread outrage as people started pointing out medical negligence and raising concerns about safety standards in such hospitals.

As the lenient response triggered severe public outrage, the higher officials including the Chief Secretary of the Health Department intervened in the matter. At last, it was declared that Jyoti had been suspended since her actions amounted to gross negligence. The Commissioner’s Office of Health and Family Welfare Services gave a statement clarifying that Fevikwik is not approved for medical use. Fortunately, the child is being closely monitored and has been reported in good health.
