In a hilarious incident that recently got the Internet’s attention, a monkey caused an island-wide power cut that lasted for 6 hours! Not just that, now this will result in a 90-minute power cut on the entire island twice every week! Here’s what the naughty animal did to punish the Sri Lankans.
Wondering how a monkey can knock out the entire nation’s electricity? Well, that’s what Colombo in Sri Lanka faced recently and the Energy Minister had no one to blame it for except the animal. What happened was that a monkey caused a disruption at the Colombo suburb grid station resulting in a major power outage nationwide. The animal came in contact with the transformer causing some imbalance in the power system. Eventually, a breakout began across the island and it took several hours for the officials to restore power. But this was not it!
A single monkey caused a significant failure at the coal power plant and it will now lead to scheduled power cuts every week. Yes, the minister has announced that Sri Lanka is set to experience a 90-minute power cut every Monday and Tuesday from now on, thanks to the rogue animal. The power rationing is a result of the sudden blackout that led to a shutdown of operations and the power station. The Electricity Board gave this statement apologizing for the outage without shedding any light on how a single incident can cause such widespread disruption. They also did not share any update on the monkey’s condition after the incident.
The bizarre yet hilarious incident has however captured many reactions on social media. Netizens are out there commenting on and criticizing the prevalent conditions regarding the country’s vulnerable power grid infrastructure. This has led to several memes and trolling about the incident and the management. Someone joked saying, “Only in Sri Lanka can a monkey knock out the entire nation’s electricity.” Another user sarcastically wrote, “Time to rethink infrastructure?” Some creative netizen wrote, “Sri Lanka tasted monkey business in the past,” pointing at the illustration of the monkey god Hanuman from the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Jokes apart, Sri Lankans have faced power shortages earlier too, especially in 2022 with 13-hour power rationing a day. Do you think it is the management’s ignorance or is the monkey at fault this time?
