A group of researchers have discovered a new frog species in Ecuador as a part of their study. It is one of the 7 newly discovered species uncovered by the National Institute of Biodiversity, the Catholic University of Ecuador, and the San Francisco University of Quito (USFQ). The researchers have named this new species after the 50-year-old Hollywood actor. Found in the Western Mountain Forest in the province of El Oro, the Ecuadorian frog species is not called ‘Leo’ as you might assume. Phyllonastes Dicaprioi is the name given to the species. Living about 1,500 meters above sea level, the animal is small and has a brown body with dark spots. But why named after Mr. DiCaprio?
The actor Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the Hollywood celebs actively involved in environmental causes. In 1998, he has even founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which works on raising public awareness about environmental issues. Besides, he is associated with the Yasuni National Park in Ecuador. He supported the closure of an oil drilling project controversy at the Park that inspired the scientists to honor the actor for this naming convention.
In a similar other happenstance, a snake species was named after Leonardo DiCaprio. Discovered in the Himalayas, the Anguiculus Dicaprio snake species was discovered for the first time by a local during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was then given the name after the actor honoring his efforts in environmental preservation activities and the protection of special habitats. Besides, his intriguing acting career is also an inspiration behind these honors.
