In São Thomé das Letras, Brazil, a rare and rather unsettling event has unfolded that has left the locals scared and the Internet stunned. Some viral pictures on social media show how hundreds of spiders appear to “rain” from the sky in the quiet town. Resembling a snowfall, the surreal spectacle of a ‘spider apocalypse’ has left everyone shocked. Here’s the reason behind one of the most bizarre natural phenomena.
Pictures of the ‘Spider Rain in Brazil’ have gone viral on social media sparking widespread fear and curiosity. What is it and why is it happening? Well, the phenomenon looks eerie, as if you were watching some vampire movie or were at a Halloween party. However, it is a natural occurrence; it is actually a massive cobweb! Hundreds of spiders are engaged in an elaborate mating ritual synchronized in the large spider web. Here, the spiders have ‘concluded’ their ritual releasing and detaching themselves from the web all at a time. This creates a rather illusion of the spiders falling or ‘raining’ down the sky.
As per expert biologists, female spiders possess a unique organ called ‘spermatheca’. This is where the females store the semen of multiple mates to fertilize their eggs. The female species can then fertilize their eggs with sperm from different males to result in several different offspring increasing genetic variability. After mating, the males and females typically ‘disperse’. This has resulted in the spooky scene witnessed in Brazil.
😳 Spiders have taken over the sky in Brazil. This apocalypse happens every year from December to March in hot and humid weather in rural areas.

After going viral on several social media platforms, the pictures and videos of the event, also commonly called ‘a spider orgy’ have garnered several views and shares holding the attention of the entire world toward the natural phenomenon. Just imagine you go out of the house and instead of pretty snowflakes, countless eight-legged creatures are drifting downward toward you. Horrible, isn’t it?
