Let’s face it! Most of us struggle to stay upright on flat pavement. We trip over nothing, wobble during yoga poses, and treat a flight of stairs like a personal Everest. Meanwhile, somewhere out there, a man decided that walking on his feet was simply too mainstream. While we’re still figuring out how to touch our toes without pulling something, he flipped the whole idea of movement upside down. Ready to meet the human tripod who makes your morning stretch look like a nap?

Meet a 38-year-old man called Sun Guo Shan. He has been turning heads by hand-walking up China’s most iconic peaks.

38-year-old Sun Guo Shan only started practicing handstand climbing in May of 2023

What started as a quirky fitness experiment in May 2023 quickly snowballed into something much bigger. It was a personal mission to scale 50 of China’s most famous mountains by spring 2025 that too, entirely on his hands.

Peak Human Ambition

Formerly, he was a school staffer. The man had a wake-up call during the COVID-19 pandemic. He realized just how vital health and movement truly are. But instead of just joining a gym, he chose to blend physical endurance with national pride. It also meant paying tribute to China’s majestic landscapes in the most jaw-dropping way possible. Although he kicked off his gravity-defying mission in May 2024, it wasn’t until a mind-blowing clip of him scaling Haibat Peak, the Wudang Mountain’s highest point at 1,612 meters, on his hands made its rounds online that the world finally took notice.

He Scaled 5 Mountains in China—Without Touching the Ground With His Feet

“Every Chinese person carries a martial arts dream deep in their heart,” said Sun Guoshan. “With my unique way of climbing, I hope to conquer 50 of the country’s most iconic mountains by this spring.” And he’s not just talking the talk, back in December, Sun spent five grueling hours hand-walking up all 999 steps of Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, located in Central China’s Hunan Province. Yes, five hours on his hands. No shortcuts. No cheats. Just pure willpower, balance, and a lot of upside-down determination.

With his final climb scheduled for spring, Sun was gearing up to take things to the next level by officially applying for a Guinness World Record to seal his name in history, one handstand at a time. His Guinness World Record is still pending, but his message is loud and clear that ambition has no limits.

While most of us treat a short walk as a fitness victory, Sun Guoshan is out there climbing mountains on his hands. Makes you rethink your definition of “hard work,” doesn’t it?
