Elon Musk may have just launched the America Party, but politics is hardly new territory for him. Long before he toyed with ballots and party names, Musk was making headlines for challenging government rules, calling out officials, and working closely with the same system he often criticized. This isn’t a sudden leap into politics; instead, it’s the next chapter in a play he’s been scripting for years.

Did you also believe Elon Musk was the original founder of Tesla? Then you have been successfully misinformed. The original founders of Tesla were Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk joined later as an investor. He then strategically positioned himself as the public face of the company through calculated influence and leadership moves.

People just discovering Elon Musk was not the original founder of Tesla but won title after 'bitter' legal battle

Widely seen as the visionary behind Tesla, Elon Musk has become synonymous with the electric vehicle revolution. Thanks to his high-profile product unveilings and ambitious declarations about the future of sustainable energy. To your surprise, Musk was not the founder. Historical records confirm that Tesla was established in 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk came a lot later to play his move.

The Story Few Know

The two met Musk at a Mars Society event, bonding over a shared passion for space exploration. At the time, Musk had not yet founded SpaceX but had recently come into significant wealth from the sale of PayPal.

Trying to rewrite how Tesla started just doesn’t sit right with many people

In early 2004, Musk joined Tesla’s story not as a founder, but as its biggest investor, contributing around $6.5 million during the company’s first major funding round. That investment was a masterstroke. It earned him a seat as chairman of the board and Tesla’s largest shareholder. However, it wasn’t until August 2007, when the board, led by Musk, ousted Eberhard as CEO, that the internal power dynamics began to visibly shift. Musk took charge as CEO in October 2008. After following two brief leadership transitions.

The Founder Debate

Tensions came to a head in 2009, when Eberhard filed a libel and slander lawsuit against Musk, objecting to Musk publicly referring to himself as Tesla’s founder. The case was ultimately settled. But with the condition that Musk and two other executives could legally claim the title of “founder”. This resolution has been a key source of confusion and conflict ever since.

Not even close to that. It was a shell corp with no employees, no IP, no designs, no prototype, literally nothing but a biz plan to commercialize AC Propulsion’s Tzero car, which was introduced to me by JB Straubel, *not* Eberhard. Even name “Tesla Motors” was owned by others!

Elon Musk, being very sharp, replied to this X user, justifying his claim to Tesla’s success by pointing to his major financial investment, relentless involvement, and leadership during the company’s most critical early years.

Critics argue that Musk’s portrayal of his role in Tesla’s origin is part of a broader pattern. “Elon Musk is a master of retconning real-life history,” one commenter noted, echoing frustrations about the blurred line between reality and PR spin. Now on X, many see a pattern of hostile takeovers followed by total brand rewrites and erasing prior identities in favor of Musk’s vision.

Supporters may point out that Musk’s funding saved Tesla from collapse, but for others, trying to rewrite how Tesla started just doesn’t sit right with many people, leaving them to question whether innovation should come with a footnote. History may remember the loudest voice. But facts don’t fade quietly. In the case of Tesla, the road to the truth runs deeper than the headlines.
