Who doesn’t love a good prank? A little bit of pranking here and there is fine after all it makes us laugh for a moment. But some people just don’t understand the difference between good humour and pranking which can land you up in jail. Like, this Mexican man who recorded himself pouring white rum into the cup of water at the water station set up for participants at the Mexico City Marathon last Sunday.

In a video he posted on social media, the intoxicated Mexican man announces that he is going to pour rum into cups of water that were set up at the hydration station for participants in the 42-kilometre race.

The footage shows the man who apparently doesn’t show his face on camera haphazardly filling the water cups with rum on a table at a water station in the neighbourhood of Polanco. Javier Hidalgo Ponce, the director of the Mexico City Institute of Sport, announced On Wednesday, that police have identified the drink-spiker. The officer said that the man will likely face prosecution for attempted poisoning the runners.

The Mexican man was intoxicated and spiked the drinks after leaving a nightclub around 6 a.m. according to reports. It is clear in the footage that he aimed to get the participants drunk.

In the video, the man is heard saying, “I’m going to pour some bloody Matusalem [rum] in, so they can show off,” the man mumbled. “The race will be the best in the world tomorrow because everyone will perform at their highest level, everyone will dash tomorrow to simulate target shooting,” he added.

The hydration station was located near the halfway point on the course when the marathon runners would have covered more than 21 km, and the consumption of undiluted rum combined with exertion could be poisoning and dangerous. The race volunteers who worked at the hydration station realized in time what had happened, and threw out the rum so thankfully no participant runners drank the spiked drinks.

Ponce blamed the horrific incident on the Mexico City mayor’s office for allowing nightclubs and bars to close so late in the city. More than 19,000 runners participated in the marathon help on Sunday. With all this happening still the participants kept going and Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso won the women’s race in a course record time of 2:25. Kenya’s Edwin Kiptoo won the men’s event, completing the course in 2:10.
