An Apple a day keeps the doctor away! In a recently viral video on social media, an Apple watch was seen on a safari with the King of the Jungle. An Australian “Jungle Doctor” strapped the device to a lion’s tongue for a cutting-edge health check!
A wildlife veterinarian from Australia, Dr. Chloe Buiting, recently posted a video on Instagram demonstrating the unique way of monitoring lions’ heart rate using an Apple watch. The video went viral on the social media platform where people called it an ‘interesting technique’ and a ‘revolutionary approach’ to keeping wildlife health in check.
Previously, Dr. Chloe’s colleagues Dr. Fabiola Quesada and Dr. Brendan Tindall were the first ones to come up with the trick when they’d strapped an Apple watch on an elephant’s ear to measure the animal’s heart rate. Dr. Chloe learned this trick from her fellow animal doctors and went on to apply it by fastening the watch on a sedated lion’s tongue as she posted the video on the Gram under her handle name @jungle_doctor. Apparently, it is a safer and easier way of monitoring the heart health of these big wild animals.
The viral video clip showed how the device was tied to the king of the jungle’s tongue as it lay on the table snoring under anesthesia while the vet measured its RPM. Dr. Buiting mentioned how the device comes in handy as working with these huge wild animals in the jungle comes with some of the biggest challenges. She also expressed the need to use an Apple watch as “most of the heart monitors are designed to be used on smaller animals”. The animal doctor expressed that she was ‘impressed’ to discover how the device could measure the heart rate of the big cat when strapped onto its tongue.
While the device is designed for humans as a revolutionary approach to keeping their health in check, these Australian vets find it a game-changer for monitoring wildlife health.
